I left my dad and Sally’s house and met Neville at Magic Beans. I’d intended to go to the office, but the wizard said he was in dire need of sustenance and I got the sense that he’d pulled another all-nighter.

The mere sight of him as he waited in line for his turn proved my hunch was correct. His brown hair was sticking straight up at the back, as though he’d slept upside down but in a standing position and pressed against a wall. His shirt was untucked and dark circles underscored his eyes. I felt a pang of guilt for allowing myself a few hours of bliss last night.

“I guess you haven’t cracked the transfer spell yet.” Otherwise he’d be tucked in bed now and snoring away.

“I’m very close. I had the Quadmire disappear from the orb but didn’t manage to get it in the game.”

“Where did it go?”

He shrugged. “No idea. I got it back though. I’m going to try another connecting spell, but I’ll need more ingredients soon.”

“This guy obviously needs a raise,” Corinne said from behind the counter.

“Don’t tell me. Tell the people who sign his paychecks.” My gaze flicked to Neville. “What would you like? It’s on me.”

The fatigued wizard ordered an extra-large coffee and a frittata. I ordered a cappuccino and a cinnamon roll. It seemed like a crime to stand in front of a display of baked goods and not choose one and I was nothing if not a law-abiding citizen.

“How’s the catch and release situation?” Corinne asked, keeping her question deliberately vague in case of any eavesdroppers.

“We’ve made progress. Treating it like a competition has helped kickstart Grandma’s interest.”

Corinne rang up our order. “That was smart.”

I paid the bill and carried our tray to the table by the window. I never grew tired of people-watching, even when I had more important matters on my mind.

I dumped a packet of sugar into my cappuccino and stirred. “Neville, I want you to go home and take a nap after you’ve eaten.”

“I’d love to, Agent Fury, but I’ve yet to accomplish the task.”

“Neither have I, but I’m still doing the bare minimum of eating and sleeping. You have to be able to function. Besides, I think if you get some rest, you might be able to figure out the spell faster. Your brain needs a break as much as the rest of you.”

The wizard lowered his gaze to the frittata. “I suppose you’re right.”

“What’s bothering you?”

The wizard dug his fork into the frittata. It looked delicious. If he didn’t need food so desperately, I’d be tempted to steal a piece.

“I’ve never struggled this much with a spell before. I don’t understand it.”

I knew exactly how he felt. I was accustomed to accomplishing tasks. Failure wasn’t in my vocabulary.

He raised his gaze to meet mine. “Maybe I’m not as skilled as I think I am.”

“Bite your tongue, Neville. You’re the most talented wizard I know. Who else could’ve whipped up an orb in a day? Husbourne Crawley? Not a chance.
